Romance scammers build trust online, then ask for money. Losses can be large, and the money is rarely recovered.
Red flags
- They can't meet in person or video chat, and always have an excuse
- They move the conversation off the dating app quickly
- They ask for money for an emergency, travel, customs fees or medical bills
- They want payment by gift card, wire transfer, payment app or cryptocurrency
- They offer to teach you about investing or cryptocurrency
What to do
Stop contact, don't send money, and report it to the dating app and at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Talk to a friend you trust.
